The Art of Gratitude

I am practicing the art of gratitude. If you want to know how to do this, or understand what the list I post every Friday is all about, then read Ann Voskamp's book One Thousand Gifts. It's very poetic, deep, truth telling, challenging and wonderful.

This is a companion painting to Eucharisteo posted earlier and was inspired by the book study group I am participating in.  This painting really illustrates the theme of this entire blog. . . "celebrating color, light and life" and you may see more like these two in the future.

and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

A busy weekend

I must confess, I have been very busy this weekend, and quite lax in my posting, but I am so happy to announce one thing did finally get accomplished.  The first page of my website is up!  CherylWhiteArtSite.com  More to come on that hopefully soon.

The art show Saturday night was extremely energizing and I enjoyed friends old and new who came.  The art will still be up for viewing  July 9 through August 13, Tuesdays through Saturdays 1 - 5PM at the MCL Grand Art Gallery 100 N. Charles St. in the heart of Old Town Lewisville.

The rest of my free time was spent trying to plan for the 2nd art class coming up this Wednesday.  The first class was last Wednesday and it has gotten off to a great start despite my being totally flustered by so many unexpected arrivals.

What does this say about our culture? 4 students signed up ahead of time. I planned for a few extra guessing on 7 students for the first evening. I actually had 11 in the class (3 had to do a different project and a mother and daughter had to share because I hadn't bought enough materials for them all) and I had to turn an additional 9 more away who asked if it was alright for them to come at the last minute.  Stressful to say the least.  I did my best to accommodate everyone the best I could.  Once they got working, it went well and they all did a great job on their projects.  A challenge, yes, but a rewarding one and I was so thankful for everyone who was there.  I loved showing them how to make their crosses and seeing them create something beautiful.

No pictures today.  I'm a little tired.

I entered these three paintings in the Anual FRESH IDEAS Art Show that will be held at the MCL GRAND Art Gallery in Lewisville.  This is a juried show, so not everything that gets submitted gets accepted into the show and I was really curious to see how many if any of mine would make it in. . . drum roll . . . AND THEY ALL GOT ACCEPTED!  I'm so happy.  If you are a blog follower, you've seen these before, but these are the three paintings that made it into the show.

Last Supper Progression Day FIVE

Judas is in the house!  Finally... I wanted him to look like he was sneaking out about to go betray Jesus.  I wasn't sure when I began what color I wanted him to be, but I knew I didn't want red on him, and he needed to look different from the others.

Yesterday I posted John 13:1-9 but look at verse 10....

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

but look at verse 10.... when I read that, I knew how I wanted to paint Judas.  He's over in the left corner, back to the group and looking off the opposite direction of the flowing water.

The Last Supper Progression Day FOUR

I still didn't get around to adding Judas today. But I did finish the flowing water and wine behind the other disciples.  I wanted to symbolize the wine at the last supper, the shed blood of Christ at the cross, the water he used to wash their feet. All these ideas ran through my head as i painted today . . . so I added three sections of purple, blue and red flowing across the canvas.

I also changed the tall thin disciple in the center.  That is  Peter. He is having a conversation with Jesus about feet washing.  You can read it in John 13:1-10.  I think this is when Peter finally understood who Jesus was and I wanted him to look like he was worshiping God's Son.

1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

So that's why he looks different today...  still don't know what to do about Judas yet.  I'll try at him tomorrow though.
